Visiting patrons may request use of Oak Street materials by contacting us ahead of time or by visiting us at the Info Desk. We may also need to request items from Oak St. or the Main Stacks for a number of reasons (verify pagination, scan a page or two, etc.) for patrons. We will then request the book(s) (Primo login information is available on the hub wiki) and hold it at the Information Desk until the patron arrives. They may only use it within the building.

Items in Oak Street Remote, requested in advance (Info Desk):

  1. Complete any reference interview that may be needed to be certain the patron is getting the materials they actually need and to see whether consulting materials onsite at the Oak Street Reading Room might be the better option. If all materials they need are from Oak Street, it is generally preferable to refer them there. If they need a few books from Stacks and a few from Oak, then you may want to proceed with requesting them on the patrons' behalf.
  2. Request the volumes via Primo. At the login option screen, choose the Courtesy Card option and enter the account number on the orange Main Stacks card (in west cabinet in the gray box with the keys).
  3. Email Reflib with instructions on what to do when the material arrives (i.e., hold until the patron comes on xxx date and/or email patron to let them know it’s available, look for something and scan).
  4. When the item arrives, check out the item(s) from the Main Stacks with the orange Stacks card, and email the patron.
  5. Put a printed copy of the catalog record inside the item with the patron’s contact information and when patron is expected or when they were notified the item was ready.
  6. Hold the item in one of the lockable desk shelves-–the cabinets in the east desk area have the most space.
  7. Email Reflib noting that the item is ready, the patron has been contacted, and where the item is being stored.
  8. When the patron arrives, ask for their drivers license or another form of identification. Keep this until they return the book. It may only be used within the building.

On-the-Spot Requests (Oak Street):
Information about Oak Street Rush requests is available in the Oak Street Rush Requests FAQ.
They may also visit the Oak Street Reading Room if it is open.

On-the-Spot Requests (Info Desk):
When not otherwise occupied helping affiliated patrons, Info Desk staff can opt to retrieve a few volumes from Stacks (or request them from Oak Street, if the patron can return in 1-2 day) so that the researcher can consult them onsite. If you are busy helping students, explain to the non-affiliate that assisting affiliated patrons takes precedence and suggest that they email in advance of their visit next time.
