Requests from non-affiliated researchers to use materials from Main Stacks:
These procedures apply to people with no other means of access. Illinois residents should be directed to apply for Courtesy Cards (but one-time, special requests can be handled as per “On-the-Spot requests” below – use your judgment!). I-Share members can use their ID from their home institution, so ask about this before placing any requests, since I-Share members can request items directly, or check them out onsite with their local institutional ID. Visitors sponsored by an academic department; Members of UI President's Council; current affiliates of a Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) institution; current members of an OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program institution, and K-12 Illinois teachers, etc. may have privileges that allow more direct access to Stacks & other materials – please refer them to Central Access Services (CAS) for more information.

Items requested in advance:

  1. Complete any reference interview that may be needed to be certain the patron is getting the materials they actually need and verify the location of the materials.
  2. Forward the inquiry (with call number and volumes specified) to CAS/Main Circulation. They will decide whether to pull the materials or expedite a Courtesy card, and then email both the patron and reflib@illinois.edu when the materials are available.

"On-the-spot" requests:

  1. Use the orange Main Stacks card  (in west drawer) to check out the books to the RIS account. If you are entering the Stacks to retrieve the items yourself, you will need your own iCard to get in.
    1. If needed, a cart can be borrowed from Main Stacks to hold the volumes.
    2. Get an ID card from the patron to hold until the items are returned.
    3. Print a copy of the catalog record of the item, and clip the ID to that. Store both in the cabinet at the east desk.
    4. The material should be used in the CAS/old Info Desk area on the 2nd floor.
    5. When the patron brings the material back, check to see that all volumes indicated have been returned, then give them their ID. Ask if they are finished using the items.
    6. If the patron no longer needs the items, return them to CAS.
