There's speculation as to the origin of the name, but the News Gazette reported in 2011 that the name might stem from Native Americans using the banks of the creek to clean their meat after hunting. This would have been also known as a "bone bed", a concept commonly referenced in archeology as the name for a site of animal remains processing.
