The quotations are inscribed on the east outer wall of the Main Library:

“The hope of democracy depends upon the diffusion of knowledge and wisdom”

"The whole world here unlocks the experience of the past to the builders of the future"

They were both “composed by the Library Committee of the Senate,” according to Phineas L Windsor, the Library Dean at the time (1926).
