The libraries on campus have changed many times over the years. Below are some of the libraries that are permanently closed.

Arms Control Reading Room and Reference Collection (Historical)

Originally located at the Armory, this was a separate collection from the Arms Control Collection located within SSHEL. Since the reading room's closure, the parts of the collection that was evaluated to be worthwhile was merged with the Arms Control Collection at SSHEL.

City Planning and Landscape Architecture Library

The CPLA Library location in Mumford Hall closed in May 2008, and all materials and staff were relocated to the ACES Library. The CPLA website will continue to be available as a resource for students and faculty.

Film Center (Now Closed)

The Film Center closed, but it used to be located on S. Oak St. The collection of films were dispersed within the University (with very few going to the Media Center) and to Film Rental Libraries throughout the Midwest.

Germanic and Romance Languages

Former name of Modern Languages Library, currently the Literatures and Languages Library.

Labor and Industrial Relations Library

This library location closed during the 2007-2008 school year. Materials previously housed in the LIRL are now located in either the Social Science, Health and Education Library (SSHEL), or the Main Stacks. There is also a SSHEL guide on finding Industrial Relations and Labor Studies materials.

Yoo-Seong Song, the LIRL librarian, has relocated to Business Information Services (BIS) and continues to serve as a subject specialist for labor and industrial relations materials.

Library Science Library

Before it was converted to a virtual space, the library science library was on the 3rd floor of the Main Library, in the room that is now the Scholarly Commons. More information about its history can be found on the LIS Library Webpage.

Main Stacks Microfilm Room

There is no longer a Microfilm Room in the Main Stacks. If you find this as a catalog location, check HPNL for the item. If you cannot locate it you can refer the question/patron to HPNL.

Prairie Research Institute Library

In 2011 the Illinois Natural History Survey Library, Illinois State Geological Survey Library, Illinois State Water Survey Library, and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center Library merged to create the Prairie Research Institute Library. That library has since closed, but any questions can be directed to Susan Braxton, the Prairie Research Institute Librarian who is now based out of Funk ACES Library.

Psychology Library

There used to be a Psychology Library located in the Psychology Building called the Susan Stout Memorial Library. This is now closed. All psychology resources now live in SSHEL.
